A mere five minute drive on Hwy 3A, just down the road from Keremeos, is the tiny hamlet of Cawston (pop. 975). Nestled in the valley, surrounded by lush agricultural land, 40% of the farms here are certified organic. In fact, Cawston is the Organic Farm Capital of Canada! The rural landscapes make it popular home for hobby farms, horse ranches and nature enthusiasts. The Similkameen people have a long history here that encompasses areas in both southern British Columbia and North Central Washington. Their reserve lands run from Cawston, through Keremeos and up towards the Hedley area. Head out on a trail and you’re likely to find almost every terrain imaginable. Be prepared because you’ll find everything from small to midsize cactus and sagebrush in a desert like environment to lush sub-alpine meadows.
