Ski right from the front door of your condo, or head into the backcountry for some breathtaking adventures. There are plenty of equipment rentals, tours, instructors and activities here for the whole family to enjoy.
World Class Skiing and Snowboarding
The Thompson Okanagan is a skier’s and snowboarder’s paradise. Our world-class ski resorts have ski in and ski out accommodation so you can make the most of your winter vacation. All our ski hills are family friendly and offer a variety of activities from downhill and cross-country skiing to outdoor ice-skating and sleigh rides.
Sun Peaks Resort outside of Kamloops has great winter skiing and snowboarding and is known for its great spring skiing right through to April. They receive on average yearly 600 cm of Interior BC’s famous light, dry, easy-to-ski powder.
Colourful Silver Star Resort near Vernon offers 3,269 acres for skiers and snowboarders of all levels with annual snowfall of more than 700 cm of dry powder. It is the third largest ski area in BC and has plenty of places for après ski.
Big White Resort near Kelowna gets approximately 750 cm of annual snowfall. It is Canada’s largest totally ski in, ski out resort village. Big White’s TELUS Terrain Park boasts a snow cross course, rail park, mini-pipe, and progressive jumps and features.
Apex Resort is only 30 minutes outside of Penticton and receives about 600 cm of dry Okanagan powder. It has won several awards including Canada’s Best Small Destination Resort award. They even have a regulation size hockey ice rink.
Back Country and Heli-skiing
Get away from crowds and experience the thrill of back country or heli-skiing. Imagine untracked and untouched powder as you breathe in the crisp mountain air of the Monashee, Rocky and Cariboo Mountains.
The Crystal Ridge Sled Ski Area in Valemount offers you six semi-cleared runs (2200 vertical feet each) to explore with a designated uptrack for snowmobile travel. Mount Robson Provincial Park and Wells Gray Provincial Park are accessible by car. Beginners can get take backcountry skiing courses provided by local outfitters.
Go even further into the wilderness with heli- and cat-skiing. Discover 100 cm of powder snow when you take a helicopter or cat to the highest of peaks. Carve your way down 20,000 vertical feet of tree skiing heaven.
Cross Country Paradise
The Stake Lake Nordic Centre, 20 minutes south of Kamloops has over 60 km of scenic groomed trails. Off-site rentals are available for adults, while youth and snowshoe rental is conveniently on site.
Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre is right next to Silver Star Ski resort and has 50 km of manicured trails and 14 km of snowshoe trails. There’s a full service day lodge, ski school, rentals, a biathlon range, and more!
Travel 20 minutes east of Kelowna and you’ll find the Kelowna Nordic Ski Centre. The adventurer in you will love the over 75 km of groomed wooded ski trails. Travel like the pioneers and explore the panoramic views of the area on snowshoe trails.
Hold on tight as you glide through winter snowscapes being pulled by a team of eager sled dogs.
Tours are available in Clearwater and Valemount, near Wells Gray and Mount Robson Provincial Parks. Both areas have miles and miles of protected wilderness where you can sit in the sled or learn the basics you need to drive the sled on your own!
For a family friendly day with the dogs, Sun Peaks Resort, near Kamloops and Big White near Kelowna offer dog sled tours.
Most of the resorts in the Thompson Okanagan offer up every winter activity you can imagine. Relax and take a snowmobile tour of the backcountry, or glide across the ice on one of the outdoor skating rinks. There are also tube parks and horse drawn sleigh rides to enjoy.
